Harjureitti is about 4 km point-to-point along the Punkaharju esker between Lake Pihlajavesi and Lake Puruvesi, in Savonlinna’s Punkaharju district in South Savo. Metsähallitus lists the trail on Luontoon.fi as part of the Punkaharju Nature Reserve setting. Visit Punkaharju describes it as an easy-going path renovated in summer 2013 with fresh signage, well suited to steady Nordic walking, tying together the Tuunaansaari resort side, Hotelli Punkaharju (the state hotel) and the Kruunupuisto hotel area. Visit Savonlinna places Punkaharju among Finland’s national landscapes and notes that marked routes let you explore the ridge year-round. From the north end near Punkaharjun retkiluistelureitti on Tuunaansaarentie you pass winter-swimming and sauna infrastructure tied to Tuunaansaari (Punkaharju Avanto, Punkaharjun Rantasauna). Getting there

Visit Punkaharju centres its map on Kruunupuisto at Vaahersalontie 44, 58450 Punkaharju, for the southern end with Takaharjun parkkipaikka beside the hotel grounds. For mid-route access Kokonharju P-alue sits near Lusto on the ridge road. The northern end lies off Tuunaansaarentie by Punkaharjun retkiluistelureitti (address shown on that place listing as Tuunaansaarentie 2) where Harjun Portti and Punkaharju Resort anchor Tuunaansaari traffic. Savonlinna is about half an hour by road from Punkaharju; Punkaharju also has rail access for car-free planners.

Good to know

Treat the dry toilet beside Lammasharju tulentekopaikka as your main outdoor sanitation stop between services. Kruunupuisto’s therapy path, saunas and indoor pools have their own rules and fees—check Visit Punkaharju or the hotel site when planning add-ons. Winter ice routes and ski tracks use the same landscape with separate grooming; carry traction if you connect onto icy shore paths.

History

Visit Savonlinna notes that Alexander I protected Punkaharju’s forests in 1803 and Nicholas I declared the area a crown park in 1843, long before it became a statutory nature reserve in 1991 as part of Finland’s national landscape programme.
