For trail facts and visitor guidance, Metsähallitus publishes Nahkiaissalo Nature Trail on Luontoon.fi. Visit Savonlinna presents Kolovesi National Park as a lakeland maze of narrow sounds, old-growth forest, and famously quiet paddling water inland from Savonlinna. Retkipaikka’s trail report by Luontopolkumies notes orange paint markings on tree trunks, a short but sharp climb onto piney rock, and slow footing over roots and boulders—sturdy boots are a good idea. The trail is about 3.8 km between the Lohilahti shore and the Nahkiaissalo parking cluster in Kolovesi National Park. Savonlinna is the host municipality on our site, and South Savo is the wider lakeland frame. The same quiet-water atmosphere also shows up in Melontaa Koloveden kansallispuistossa, the long kayaking circuit through the national park—useful context if you arrive by canoe or kayak and step ashore at Lohilahti.

Length & route

The trail is about 3.8 km along forest paths, rocky shelves, and short steep climbs beside Kolovesi’s shoreline. Some public tables round the distance a little lower, while Retkipaikka’s on-trail measurements landed closer to four kilometres and about one hour fifteen at a leisurely pace.

Getting there

Regional road 471 between Enonkoski and Heinävesi passes the turn to Nahkiaissalontie; follow that narrow paved spur roughly three kilometres to the national-park parking. Retkipaikka describes room for about ten cars, an information board, and the start posts beside Nahkiaissalo P-alue. The City of Enonkoski also describes the shared “Kolovesi kansallispuisto Nahkiaissalo” parking approach from Enonkoski via the Hanhivirta ferry road—helpful if you navigate from municipal outdoor pages instead of Savonlinna. Nahkiaissalo P-alue (62.21536, 28.92279) is the natural car access point at the north-east end of the route; Lohilahti’s campsites and Lohilahti kanoottilaituri suit paddlers who land from the bay.

Good to know

Dogs must be kept on a leash throughout Finnish national parks; see Kolovesi National Park instructions. Expect winter road maintenance to end—confirm seasonal access before a cold-weather trip. Carry water; dry toilets are available but there is no tap along the tread. Respect quiet-water rules that keep motor traffic off the narrow sounds, which protects the Saimaa ringed seal habitat described on Visit Savonlinna.
