Description

The Six-Inch Story is a short, roughly 1.2 km marked loop on Örö fortress island in Kemiönsaari, Southwest Finland. It sits in Saaristomeri National Park and threads the south-end military heritage cluster around the historic six-inch battery barracks, the bunker bivouac building and the sandy Solkuro shoreline—an easy orientation walk before you commit to the longer blue-marked six-inch circuit. The trail is about 1.2 km as one complete loop on our map. It concentrates on the six-inch barracks yard, bunker approaches and Solkuro beach rather than the full south peninsula. Getting there

Örö is reachable only by sea. Most summer visitors drive to the Kasnäs harbour area on the Kemiönsaari mainland, leave a car in the large harbour carparks and continue on the scheduled Örö ferry or other booked boat transport; Luontoon.fi and Visit ÖRÖ carry the current operator links. Once ashore, follow island signage from the harbour cluster toward the six-inch barracks services—the story loop begins from that south-end yard rather than the northern 120 mm circuit trailhead.

Good to know

Camping, open fires and drones follow Saaristomeri National Park and Örö-specific instructions on Luontoon.fi; the reservable tent pitch beside the loop must be booked through official channels rather than treated as ad hoc camping. Sea conditions and last sailing times should be checked before you walk far from the harbour.

History

Russian coastal artillery construction on Örö began under a January 1915 order; the four-gun 152/45 C six-inch battery at the southern tip was finished in December 1915, and the adjacent log barracks took the "six-inch barracks" name from the gun calibre. When Russian forces withdrew in spring 1918, Finnish inspectors found breech-blocks dumped in the sea and sights sabotaged among other damage—the Coastal Artillery Museum's Örö fortress article collects that episode. Finnish coastal artillery units then garrisoned the island through both wars before Metsähallitus opened the recreational destination in 2015.
