Description
Helmi MTB vaativa is a roughly 6.2 km advanced mountain-bike line on the red-graded network at Hiekkahelmi in Paimio, Southwest Finland. For rules, the downloadable PDF map, and how this line sits beside the blue and pink options, start with the mountain biking information published by City of Paimio. Luontoon.fi hosts the same route with map browsing and activity metadata. The route opened in spring 2022 on the former Mäntyrinne sand pit and nearby rock knobs; it is marked in red and uses mandatory direction shown by arrows. The line is fast-changing under wheel: former sand-pit rollers link to rock climbs and drops, berms, small jumps, and short bridges where Tammireitit describes the mix of surfaces and pond views along the advanced circuit.
You begin from the Hiekkahelmi parking and service cluster — beach, dry toilets, campfire spot, and bins are part of the same arrival area described by City of Paimio. Early on you pass Hiekkahelmi itself and the beach volleyball court at the trailhead, good references for where pedestrians and riders meet. From this hub the red Helmi MTB line connects in the same terrain as Helmi MTB treenirata, the short pink skills loop, and Helmi MTB keskivaativa on the blue intermediate option. Lampipolku 2,5 km leaves from Hiekkahelmi as a separate marked walking-oriented loop on the old pit floor. Paimion polku can be joined for a much longer, very technical ride toward the sports park; note that e-assist is restricted on part of Paimion polku south of road 110 under that route’s agreement. In winter, volunteer crews maintain a compacted fat-bike network that includes Helmi MTB segments together with Lampipolku and groomed parts of Paimion polku; the winter biking notes spell out what is tamped, thaw behaviour, and dog rules.
Length & route
The ride is about 6.2 km as one continuously marked advanced line on the red grading. City of Paimio describes it as a six-kilometre red route with compulsory direction, built on the Mäntyrinne pit and rock terrain with rollers, berms, and jump lines aimed at skilled riders. Tammireitit notes bridges and short elevated sections mixed with pond scenery.
Getting there
Drive to Hiekkahelmentie 41, 21530 Paimio. Official maps and the municipality text place the info board at the southeast side of the Hiekkahelmi parking, which also lists WC, beach access, and a fire ring. Urheilupuisto is an alternative start if you need parking closer to town facilities.
Good to know
Helmi MTB is built for mountain biking but City of Paimio states other trail users may proceed on foot and must be respected. Paimion polku bans e-assist on its southern leg by agreement; do not assume the same rule covers Helmi MTB without checking current signage. Winter maintenance uses volunteer Snow Dog tamping; avoid riding during thaw when tracks get punched in, as described for the wider winter network.
History
City of Paimio opened the Helmi MTB network on 21 May 2022 as the first phase of the red six-kilometre advanced route, blue three-kilometre intermediate route, and roughly 300-metre pink practice loop on the former Mäntyrinne extraction bench and nearby rock terrain.
