Description
Jeturkasti Ancient Trail is about a 4.7 km hiking loop in Teijo National Park in Salo, Southwest Finland. Varsinais-Suomi gathers coastal ironworks villages, lake shores, and compact forest around Teijo; this route is one of the park’s clearest introductions to that mix. The circle is named for Jeturkasti, an ancient stone shore where Baltic waves worked cobbles smooth roughly 9000 years ago; the Jeturkasti Ancient Trail page on Luontoon.fi describes the walking line, terrain, and the wide “devil’s field” exposure. Visit Salo outlines the national park setting, village access, and services such as rentals and sauna bookings at Teijo Nature Centre by Lake Matildanjärvi.
Retkipaikka published Luontopolkumies’ spring hike on a dry day: orange diamond markers, obvious junctions, and easy pine-heath walking with short rockier steps near Matildanjärvi’s bluff and again over a low rock step before Lähdesuo. From Jeturkastin pysäköintialue, yksi esteetön pysäköintipaikka the ancient shore sits on a short overlapping section with Jeturkastin vaativa esteetön reitti and the wider Jeturkasti area; Out in the Nature reminds readers the site is Natura-protected and that supposed “caveman’s refrigerators” among the stones are protected antiquities.
Practically, you can treat the hike as three bands. Near Kariholman pysäköintialue you quickly reach Isoholman tulentekopaikka, Isoholma Laavu, Vicksbäckinlahti Grillipaikka, and Vicksbäckinlahti Laavu, then Teijon Kalamaja 1 (Vaappu), Teijon Kalamaja 2 (Lippa), and Teijon Kalamajojen tulipaikka beside the Teijon luontokeskus forecourt. That lakeside band also includes Kariholman ruokailukatos with its woodshed and benches, Kariholman invalaituri for launching small craft, Kavanderinlahden tulentekopaikka, Matildanjärven sauna, and Matildanjärven venelaituri; many people pause here before continuing. Further east the path touches Roosinniemen laavu and crosses mire boardwalk beside Lähdesuo before closing at Jeturkasti parking. Matildanjärven kierros shares much of the northern lakeshore tread if you want a longer circuit on linked markers.
Length & route
The trail is about 4.7 km as one loop through bright pine forest with short rock steps and less than a kilometre of Lake Matildanjärvi shoreline tread. Retkipaikka’s outing was roughly five kilometres in about one hour forty minutes including photography. Allow about two to three hours if you use the cook shelter, laavus, or nature centre courtyard. A short link along Skoilantie and Matildanjärventie appears between forest sections. Duckboards cross wet mire beside Lähdesuo toward the end of the loop.
Getting there
Common starts are Kariholman pysäköintialue at Matildanjärventie 20, the large Matildanjärvi customer parking at Matildanjärventie 86–88, Teijon kansallispuisto parkkipaikka - etelään beside the nature centre, or the small Jeturkasti lot on Skoilantie 354 with one accessible space signed for Jeturkastin pysäköintialue, yksi esteetön pysäköintipaikka. Out in the Nature notes Kariholma and Matildanjärvi car parks stay open in winter while the Skoilantie pocket may not always be maintained. In summer, scheduled buses from Salo can reach the Matildanjärvi parking area; check Visit Salo and local timetables before you travel. Metsähallitus customer service for destination questions is available at +358 206 394 000.
Good to know
Teijo National Park requires dogs on a leash; the same applies on this circle. Treat stone hollows and any archaeological traces as protected: avoid digging or moving structures. Equipment rental, sauna, and accommodation around Matildanjärvi are commercial services with their own booking rules. For the shortest roll-in visit to the ancient shore without the full loop, see the separate Jeturkastin esteetön reitti and Jeturkastin vaativa esteetön reitti pages on Luontoon.fi.
History
Local stories call clusters of wave-rounded stones pirunpelto—“devil’s fields”—as though giants had hurled them in anger. Jeturkasti is one of Teijo’s largest such exposures: geologists read it as a post-glacial Ancylus–Litorina shoreline lifted far above today’s coast as the land rebounded.
