Description

Hiunjärvi nature trail is about 4.1 km through forest and rocky ground around Lake Hiunjärvi just north of central Uusikaupunki. Southwest Finland mixes coast and inland lakes; this short route is a compact example next to town. Despite being beside the town, the lake has stayed quiet and undeveloped: roughly 12 hectares of water and marshy shoreline, regionally important for nesting and resting birds. Visit Uusikaupunki lists distances from each trailhead, links to a trail map, notes that the nature trail is being renewed, and mentions the Hiunpolku brochure from the tourist office on Rauhankatu 10. Early along the route you reach Hiunjärven lintutorni, a birdwatching tower with a wide view over the lake; ducks, coots, and typical shoreline waders are easy to pick out, especially on an early visit. Length & route

The trail is about 4.1 km as one continuous outdoor route on our map. Official descriptions also quote shorter and longer loops between about 1.4 km and 3.8 km depending on whether you start from the pedestrian tunnel near Saarnisto school, the end of Juolukkatie, or Otavakuja; Hiunjärven laavu publishes example out-and-back figures to the tower and laavu from the tunnel or Juolukkatie. Terrain is mostly forest footpath and occasional rock; expect modest ups and downs rather than long climbs.

Getting there

Main access points are the pedestrian tunnel near Saarnisto school, the end of Juolukkatie, and the end of Otavakuja; maps are posted at starts and junctions. The city’s school-area map shows how the tunnel links Santtiontie 17 into the trail network. The tourist office can hand out the Hiunpolku brochure.

Good to know

The municipal trail page lists no winter maintenance; assume ungroomed foot travel in snow and ice. Respect quiet bird habitat near the tower and shoreline. Kaislatuuli observed heavier weekend use; plan width and passing accordingly.
