Description

The Pitkäkangas fitness trail is about 3.4 km as one continuous path on forested ridge south-east of Haapajärvi, in the Kumiseva countryside by the Pitkäkangas harju. Haapajärvi lies in North Ostrobothnia; the Pitkäkangas ridge is classic sand-and-pine esker country next to the Lohijoki watercourse, with trail surfaces that are partly fine-topped gravel suitable for steady walking and running and partly sandy forest road typical of the harju. Roughly 2.5 km from the start you pass Pitkänkankaan pulkkamäki, a small sled hill beside Pitkänkankaantie. A little farther on, about 3.1 km in, Pitkäkankaan kuntoportaat gives a short fitness-stair workout right on the route. Near the far end, about 3.4 km from the start, Pitkäkankaan kota offers a wood kota that works well as a windbreak and snack stop—see our Pitkäkankaan kota page for more. The same cluster links to other maintained corridors in winter: overlapping ski-track variants and a shorter running-trail loop use the Pitkänkankaan pulkkamäki area and Pitkäkankaan kota. Aurinkolatu is an unlit sand-based walking and bike loop on Pitkälläkangas with blue and red trail markings; the Aurinkolatu page lists parking off Pitkänkankaantie, distances of roughly half a kilometre to the Tynnyrikoski nature trail and about a kilometre to Pitkänkangaan ski centre, and a kota with dry toilet at the ski centre. Length & route

The trail is about 3.4 km end to end and is not a closed loop. Along the way you pass Pitkänkankaan pulkkamäki (around 2.5 km), Pitkäkankaan kuntoportaat (around 3.1 km), and Pitkäkankaan kota (around 3.4 km). Winter visitors can pair this corridor with lit and unlit ski-track options that share the same facilities at Pitkäkangas. Nearby Aurinkolatu offers signed 2 km and roughly 4.2 km sand loops for walking and biking in summer and skiing in winter.

Getting there

The City of Haapajärvi lists the facility at Pitkänkankaantie 393, 85800 Haapajärvi. By car from Haapajärvi centre, follow main road 27 toward Pyhäjärvi about 1.5 km, turn right toward Kumiseva on Kumisevantie (about 5.7 km to the village), then continue straight on Pitkänkankaantie about 4.8 km toward Pitkälläkangas—the Aurinkolatu page describes this approach and notes a parking area on the left side of Pitkänkankaantie for the parallel Sunshine Trail network. Walking access to Tynnyrikoski viewpoints from the Pitkäkangas outdoor parking is about half a kilometre along paths described by Retkipaikka. Winter maintenance of the ploughed access to the Tynnyrikoski parking may differ from the main trail parking.

Good to know

Travel on municipality hiking infrastructure is under everyman’s rights but remains at your own risk; the City of Haapajärvi repeats this on the Retkeilevä Haapajärvi hiking pages for locally built routes. Fishing is prohibited on Lohijoki because of protected trout; the Tynnyrikoski rapids area is under nature protection. Open fires on the Aurinkolatu sand trails are strictly forbidden —check current rules for Pitkäkankaan kota and any fireplace separately on the managing pages.
